Nishiki Market in Kyoto, Kyoto, Kansai

Nishiki Market in Kyoto has been being called as “Kyoto’s Kitchen”. It has been for approximately 400 years but the original market was founded here about 1300 years ago as a place to trade fish. Now they sell not only fish but other fresh and processed foods mainly used for Kyoto cuisine.

This 390m-long market passage is in the heart of Kyoto city with more than 120 shops. As Tsukiji Outer Market in Tokyo has become a popular tourists spot, thousands of overseas travelers visit the market for ready-to-eat meals and souvenirs.

Unlike Tsukiji, Nishiki Market is a roofed arcade. It is also connected to another roofed arcade called “Shinkyogoku”, which is a newer and larger market street with various shops and restaurants. So if it happens to rain while you are in Kyoto, I’d recommend to enjoy shopping and eating at those markets.
